Uba Library; Enriched with New Books from the International Committee of the Red Cross

The university of Bamenda library has been beefed up with new books from the international committee of the red cross to students in the faculty of law and political sciences. Some of the books include: “Digital technologies and war”, “customary international Humanitarian law” and a host of others. The event that took place at Amphi theatre 340.

This is in a two-day seminar chaired by the representative of the vice chancellor Prof Mbifi Richard director of administrative affairs with the theme “awareness session on knowledge of the ICRC and the relevance of international humanitarian law IHL in contemporary amend conflict for post graduates’ students in law and communication”. The seminar aimed at creating awareness on the available legal frameworks for students in the faculty of law and political sciences and those in the department of communication and development studies so as to maintain mutuality in reporting and investigating situations in armed conflict zones.

In a chat with the head for Bamenda sub delegation of the ICRC Wannes Carler, he explained the importance of the books to student “the books would help build the future leaders of tomorrow to tackle issues on war and conflict not only in Cameroon but in other parts of the world. He reiterated that students should have the desire to serve humanity” Wanness advice

The seminar kick started with students from the department of communication and development studies where they were drilled on how to be mutual in reporting stories in a conflict situation, the level of involvement of ICRC in protecting journalist in time of arrest by both conflicting parties. The students were accompanied by their lecturers who joined them to rekindle their knowledge on conflict reporting.

Just like students from the communication department, students from the faculty of law and political sciences round up the seminar and these post graduate students were schooled on international and non international armed conflict and some legal bindings that guides jurist in settling conflict

Talking to one of the post graduates’ students who goes by the name Tifuh Fri Brenda from the department of Public Law, revealed how important the seminar was to her “it is beneficiary to me because i got to learn many things about international and non international armed conflict, equally the rules of international humanitarian law which is important in the world that we live in”. She goes ahead to narrates how she intends to use this knowledge in the future to assist her community “I would like to further my research in this particular line of study so that it will be of great help to those that are around me and those that are still to come” she recounts

Faith Afah is another student in the department of Public Law shared the benefits of the seminar to her, “broadens your idea of international matters, the ICRC has to do with international convention, the Geneva Convention and I just discovered that protection of those in the battle field and in crisis and prevention in crisis”. Faith explains.

At the end of the seminar, the representative of the vice chancellor Prof Mbifi Richard called on the students to develop themes around which other seminars can be organized ant the university will gladly support such efforts. He went ahead to urge the students” do not allow dust to cover the books donated, read them and explore your knowledge for I can sure you that they are enriching”

However, the collaboration of the university and the international committee, laid a foundation stone for more opportunities.

Signatories of the MoU and SPAs

The University of Bamenda and some Private higher education institutions PHEIs has taken a big step to expanding it's academic influence by signing a memorandum of understand MoUs and a Special agreement of Extension SPAs to promote learning and research in the country.

  Chaired by the representative of the Vice Chancellor, Prof Cheo Suh Emmanuel, the University of Bamenda signed a memorandum of understanding with 19Private institutions, 5 special agreement and 3 extension of special agreement. The ceremony took place at the university of Bamenda restaurant.

The signing of  understanding and agreement will widen the financial and academic authority of the university and this will equally provide legal binding and recognition of affiliations for the Private signatories of this agreement

An interview with Prof Cheo Suh 

In a a post ceremonial interview with the representative of the Vice Chancellor of the University of Bamenda, he enumerates the significance of the signatory to the institute  " The University of Bamenda like other state universities have a mandate within the higher education framework of the country to accompany Private institution on a journey aimed at training the work force for tomorrow. In that sense, our major role is to ensure that the programs that these schools have, the University of Bamenda has the man power to follow up these schools to ensure that they implement the programs according" Prof Cheo Suh Emmanuel denotes.

 He goes ahead to say " By establishing these goals, it is to ensure that each and every school will work hand-in-hand to ensure that forget anything. We also ensure that by these signatories we will be comfortable to say that our students can use facilities in these institutions just as they can also benefit from what the university has to offer". He enumerates.

Prof Cheo Suh highlighted a number of strategies that is used by the UBa to maintain the respect of this agreement "We have teams that follow up the teaching, exams. Examinations are not written until they have been approved by the technical persons in the University of Bamenda. We also have teams that follow up their certification process to ensure that those who are going to graduate from those institutions and incidentally have a decree in the University of Bamenda, their transcripts is an evidence to voge that they have gone through the right process".

Finding out the importance from on of the signatory institutions,  I came across Ndongndeh Godlove the proprietor of The Higher institute of Professional Education and Practice in Bafoussam and he reveals that " The MoU will give credibility to all the higher programs that my institution offers in BA, Masters and HND. This will be an opportunity for students who are hoping to be affiliated with the university of Bamenda" he says.

  

The objective of the MoU is to establish a framework for mutual collaboration and cooperation between two institutions and it is signed by the Ministry of Higher Education.

"UBa Trains job creators and not Seekers"'

Convocation ceremony

The vice chancellor of the University of Bamenda, Professor Theresia Nkuo-Akenji has revealed that the University trains job creators and not only seekers.

This is a post event interview with the Vice Chancellor on the occasion of the 13th convocation ceremony which took place at the explanade of the University.

 

The Vice Chancellor in her speech also declared that this year's best graduating student is a female from the Faculty of Education and eight others from the undergraduate level.

The convocation ceremony saw the presentation of over 80 PhD graduates from the different schools and faculties who acknowledged that they will be humble and improve on the community with their research.

During the event, the students were graced to listen to the graduation discourse from the head of MIDENO Mr Matoya Cletus  Anye who denoted that " over the years I have observed students from different fields go for internship just for partial fulfillment" he laments.

He went ahead to say that " it is time the University incorporate and the students should adopt more of practicals than theory". In his discourse, he encouraged the students to also consider agriculture because an old adage says "ground no di lie", 

This is a wake up call for the graduating students and others to always be determined about everything they are doing.

At the end of the ceremony prices were awarded to best students from the undergraduate and post graduate level to motivate and encourage others to also work hard.

Talking to one of the best sudent Eneobe Precious a student from the department of Accounting, " i am happy to have been amongst the best graduating students in my department this is to say hard work pays". Precious reveals excitingly.

The event is highly attended by students from the department of communication and development studies distributing and making publicity for the 3rd Edition of the UBa voice newspaper, while others were making sales, some were keen to the event.

It should be noted that over 5000 and above students have been graduated to the job market from the University of Bamenda worth more of other learning institutions. This is a prove that the job market is a competitive world and only the tough can survive.

Canopies set for convocation ceremony 

   Preparations have heightened at the explanade of the University where canopies have been set up to receive over 5110 undergraduate and post graduate students from the six schools and faculties.

 Graduating students are doing last minute preparations in tailoring shops, beauty spa and fashion shops to get cloths that will seal up their efforts as students in the University.

Other students can be seen rushing to get robes but it is however sad that some of these students have not been able to get robes due to a shortage from schools and faculties. This made some students to be referred to other schools which are not their to demand for robes. But as we all know "charity begins at home".

  Talking to a graduating student Hazel who does not have a robe, he says he has been by his friends advice to attend the ceremony without the robe and later on borrow one from a friend and snap to emortalize the event.

It is worth noting that students have resulted to renting out robes to photographers who own studios.

CADS Elect new President , publish 3rd edition of departmental newspaper.

Elections and newspaper distribution preparations

Students in the department of communication and development studies have elected a new government that will be at the helm of their activities. The election took place under the ospieces of the head of department, Prof Akoko Robert and the incumbent president.

Yufonyuy Princely has been elected  president to top the affairs of students in the department in close collaboration with the administration taking over from Edwin Ajimsimbom. the election that took PBA 08, saw students from all levelsl  present to listen to the manifestos of the incoming government and had to asks questions for better clarification before electing.

The students voted using the secret ballot method  ,but picking either  "YES" or " NO". Coordinated by the faculty president Yuin Job and the incumbent president, the results were in favor of the only party present which was the green party.

Election process 

 The election process equally doubles as the publishing and distribution of the 3rd edition of the UBa Voice newspaper to students. This activity is to help students gain hands on experience in advertising, marketing and boost their persuasion power. 

Talking to Ngam Belinda who has completed  sales she says "it was an exciting moment for her to sell her department though it was stressful, I was able to complete the sales today".

This distribution of the newspaper continues tomorrow for students to sell their department and a product of their education to people from diversed backgrounds.

NAPHI Students in UBa Drive Technological Advancements through Development Festival

Students of the Higher National Polytechnic Institute (NAPHI) in the University of Bamenda have over the weekend showcased their strides in technology. This is during a Development Festival held at the Epic Event Center in Bamenda with over 500 students from the university and beyond.

The event saw the presence of key university administrators who were keen on experiencing the practical innovations presented by the students.

The annual Development Festival, known as Devfest, is a Google-sponsored initiative for Google Developer Groups (GDGs) globally. In Bamenda, the local GDGs of Bamenda and Bambili collaborated to organize this substantial festival, offering talks, workshops, demos, and games to explore tech advancements.

Dr. Pascaline Ndukum, Head of the Department for Computer Engineering, commended the students for their efforts in organizing the event and emphasized the importance of university involvement in their projects. "I call on you to formally involve the University of Bamenda in all your projects," Dr. Ndukum urged, highlighting the institution's role in guiding and supporting student initiatives.

The festival encompassed sessions on various cutting-edge topics such as Web Technologies, Android, Machine Learning/Tensor Flow, Cloud, Flutter, Firebase, and more. It aimed to raise awareness, foster engagement, create networking opportunities, and open doors for young tech enthusiasts, particularly UBa students.

Ida Delphine, the GDG lead and Chief organizer, highlighted the event's objective to share knowledge and support the university and its students. "Our enthusiastic community has learned immensely in recent years, motivating us to give back and collaborate," Delphine expressed, emphasizing their commitment to supporting the university and its projects.

Dr. Pascaline Ndukum, in a post-event interview, urged students to align their impressive presentations with academic achievements. "Our NAPHI students are excelling in engaging communities and promoting tech awareness. They must balance their academic endeavors with their impactful work," Dr. Ndukum advised.

Attendees left the event equipped with souvenirs such as stickers, water bottles, and t-shirts, alongside a wealth of knowledge to further technical and sustainable development in their communities.

"Ngala Olga, a student at the University of Bamenda and one of the beneficiaries conveyed her heartfelt appreciation to the entire GDG community. She expressed her commitment to leveraging the knowledge gained during the event to foster her passion for technology, vowing to channel it towards enhancing her career as a tech enthusiast."

The University of Bamenda students' active involvement in technological advancement mirrors the institution's prowess in fostering knowledge, integrity, and entrepreneurship, embodying the essence of a promising future as the slogan of the University states "University of the Future"

The Faculty of Arts Dean Launch Elections into Student Association

Dean's communique

The Dean of the Faculty of Arts Prof Canute Ngwa has said that elections into the executive bureau of the faculty of Arts student association will take place on Wednesday 13th December at 10am in the faculty boardroom.

 In a release signed by the Dean, he highlights that interested candidates vying for the post must attain the eligibility criteria according to the rules and regulations governing the election of student association executive bureau of the University one of which is: the student must have at least 2.4GPA from previous academic records 

 After qualifying for post according to the eligibility criteria, candidates are expected to submit the following documents on or before Friday 8th December 2023 through the Head of service for Admission and Record.

Eligibility Criteria in the release

A hand written application addressed to the vice chancellor, a defined color for the party, a list of candidates indicating their class, post, registration number and contacts. Photocopies of fees receipt and payment receipt of faculty dues for all the years and most importantly a non- refundable registration fee of 15000FCFA.

 Candidates vying for the post of faculty association president after submitting their documents are required to carry out open campaigns on campus or which two minutes will be given for each party to present his/her manifesto. And their electoral college will be made up of departmental executives only.

It is worth noting that the student executive has the obligation to serve as a leison between the students and the administration
